It's 11AM (EST)...
...why does Marty still have a job? The Chargers' GM should have interrupted Marty's post-game press conference to announce he was no longer the Chargers' head coach.
The Chargers were at home; had 2 weeks off; had the MVP, and absent a failed drugs test, the defensive player of the year; a Pro Bowl QB; a Pro Bowl kicker; the better offense; the better defense; probably the better special teams; and an 8 pt. lead in the 4th Quarter...and still managed to lose.
It is 75 and sunny, you've got a Pro Bowl kicker, and you don't attempt a 49 yd. FG on 4th & 10...because "you've got a play you think will work." What? This is the freakin' NFL, I hope you have a 10-yd. play "you think will work," that doesn't mean you pass up 3 pts. Then the challenge in the 4th Quarter on UK Grad. Marlon McCree's (who was AWESOME all day until this incident) best Peach Bowl impression, on the most obvious fumble of all-time...as Mike Greenberg said this morning, the only reason it could have been challenged was that the Chargers' staff REALLY wanted to believe it couldn't have actually happened...so the Chargers have no timeouts during their late push for a FG... and even then, you've got 8 seconds left and you don't even try to pick up 3-5 yds. on an out pattern or something... so that you "force" Brady to take a knee after a missed 54 yd. attempt?
Marty is 0-6 in his last 6 playoff games, and 0-2 with the Chargers (with one of those losses to the freakin' Jets for God's sakes). I mean, Vince Vaughn could have won that game for the Chargers just by giving the "Kill the Bunny" speech from "Swingers" (...."you've got these fuckin' claws, man!!!"). It doesn't matter if it is "fair" or not; some guys are just snakebit...and Marty is one of them. I mean how do you tell Chargers' fans you are bringing Marty back? You can't!!! How can you ask those players to bust their butts in the offseason when they know Marty will be pulling the strings in January 2008? You can't!!! So just drop the axe already!
